Bike Around the Bomb: Aug. 12, 9am

Remembering Hiroshima, Imagining Peace will mark the 72nd anniversary of the horrific atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States by inviting people to “Bike Around the Bomb.” This 13-mile ride represents the zone of destruction that would follow the detonation of a relatively small nuclear weapon (a US-made W76 100-kiloton nuclear bomb) if it were to be dropped on downtown Pittsburgh. Meet at 9:30am, Schenley Plaza (Oakland), at the gravel pit for a brief orientation. The ride will leave promptly at 10:00am. We will have a snack/rest stop at the Children’s Museum on the North Side and will finish back at Schenley Plaza (Oakland).

This ride is especially important in light of the present climate of tension over the use of nuclear weapons by North Korea and the hard line being taken by the Trump administration. It is an opportunity to remember the devastation and loss of lives that such weapons bring.
